Some Brief Perspective: Everyone knows that solder paste has long been the favorite for high volume reflow in PCB manufacturing for years. So why was it that solder paste never made a transition to the electronic bench where prototyping, low volume production, and rework are performed daily? Essentially there were two reasons:

1.) Use of paste with old soldering irons was problematic, if not simply prohibitive (picture bacon grease splattering).

2.) Most all solder pastes or creams typical of high volume production processes are limited by very short shelf life due to the flux/sphere ratios which were necessary for conveyor oven reflow systems. Such pastes require refrigeration.

Recognizing the obvious, superior solder joints are made with solder paste over solder wire (especially with SMD's), Zephyrtronics developed a no-clean, lead-free paste with a flux/sphere ratio did not require refrigeration and that was specifically targeted for the electronic bench, that would work harmoniously with a low-velocity, non-contact hot air pencil in conjunction with a preheated substrate assembly (For more details, and to see just how easy the process is, check out our short, but helpful "Soldering Paste Video Demonstration" below on this webpage.
